FEDERAL COURT RELEASES ANTHEM/CIGNA MERGER OPINION

Today the United States District Court for the District of Columbia released an opinion setting out its reasons for enjoining the merger of insurance giants Anthem and Cigna. The Court held that the combination would harm competition in the market for sales of healthcare coverage to large commercial accounts, and that the alleged “efficiencies,” including billions of dollars in reduced payments to healthcare providers, did not save the merger.
