WHATLEY KALLAS FILES CHALLENGE TO ALABAMA’S CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICTS

Whatley Kallas and its co-counsel recently moved for a preliminary injunction prohibiting the State of Alabama for conducting Congressional elections using the redistricting plan recently approved by the Alabama Legislature. According to the complaint and the motion for a preliminary injunction, Alabama’s Congressional districts are racially gerry-mandered to concentrate Black voters in a single district. The motion proposes an alternative map that returns to Alabama’s traditional practice of keeping counties whole, while giving Black voters the opportunity to elect candidates of their choice in two districts instead of one. A hearing on the motion for a preliminary injunction will begin on January 4, 2022 in Birmingham.
