ALABAMA DISTRICT COURT FINDS THAT ALABAMA’S LEGISLATURE VIOLATED THE VOTING RIGHTS ACT AND FOURTEENTH AMENDMENT

Following an eleven-day trial, a three-judge panel of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama held that the Alabama Legislature violated the Voting Rights Act and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment when it intentionally drew Congressional districts that would prevent Black voters from electing the candidates of their choice. Before the trial, the plaintiffs had obtained a preliminary injunction against the use of Congressional districts drawn in 2021, defended the injunction in the Supreme Court, and participated in the creation of a remedial map, which was used in the 2024 congressional elections. Attorneys from Whatley Kallas participated in the preliminary injunction proceedings and filed an amicus brief in the Supreme Court on behalf of State Senators Bobby Singleton and Rodger Smitherman, among others. A copy of the district court’s opinion is here.
