Economists Find Blue Cross Blue Shield Antitrust Settlement Means More Than $17.3 Billion of Value for Providers
In October 2024, Whatley Kallas announced a monumental settlement in a long-running antitrust lawsuit filed on behalf of healthcare providers across the nation. The settlement impacts all Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) entities in the country, as well as the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. It is the largest antitrust settlement in the history of the United States healthcare industry.
The settlement is comprised of a $2.8 billion cash payment and significant injunctive relief that will transform the BlueCard program, greatly benefitting providers who remain in the settlement and their patients. Economists value the long-term benefits and injunctive relief at a minimum of $17.3 billion, with an average administrative cost savings of $7.55 per BlueCard claim.
